The Politics of the First: The Emergence of the Black Model in the Civil Rights Era by Janice Cheddie
There has been very little scholarly work that examines the entrance of Black women into the mainstream Anglo-American fashion modelling industry. Within mainstream popular discourses, if Black models are discussed at all, common-sense mythology is often reiterated: that Black models appeared as a result of the growing liberalisation of the fashion establishment, who belatedly acknowledged the beauty, grace and poise of Black women.
This book examines the contributions of women who influenced the fashion industry but went unrecognised due to racial discrimination at the time.
